Traditionally, moon cakes are infused with embedded egg yolks and/or lotus seed paste, but there is bound to be modern renditions of the traditional pastry. They were also traditionally used as sacrificial offerings for the Moon God, but are considered nowadays as symbols of family reunion. They are believed to have originated from Yuan dynasty (1271–1368) revolutionaries, who are said to have used the pastries to pass secret messages between each other. If you are in Hong Kong during the Mid-Autumn Festival, it’s almost impossible not to notice mooncakes as they overwhelm the region. The 2017 mid-autumn festival will feature demonstrations of making moon cakes, masks, star-shaped lanterns, rabbit lanterns, glutinous rice figurines, paper doctors, and bamboo dragonfly.
