#Textual criticism of the old testament free
In many instances it appears that divergent Septuagintal read- ings result from Hebrew variants instead of free translation, in contrast to what was previously supposed. 2, which compares different readings of the LXX and of the Qumran Hebrew text, shows the importance of the scrolls for the reconstruction of originals. The last chapter, ((Doing textual criticism)), can serve as introduction to the methods of textual criticism. Since, in the author’s view, the Greek versions in a great many instances provide an access to the earliest discernible stages in the his- tory of the OT text, he makes a study of these, and then concentrates his attention on the Septuagint. Since the original copies of the texts no longer exists, and all subsequent texts do not agree, some obviously being (( corrupt )) (diverging from the original), the task of textual criticism will consist in reconstructing the best text by cdmparing the extant texts with one another.
